Skąd się wzięła ta gra?
Gra Kamień, Papier, Nożyce, Jaszczurka, Spock (Rock, Paper, Scissors, Lizard, Spock) została wymyślona w 1998 roku przez Sama Kassa i Karen Brylę — na długo przed serialem. Kass stworzył rozszerzoną wersję klasycznej gry, bo zauważył że znajomi grający ze sobą remisują w 75–80% przypadków (za mało opcji, zbyt przewidywalne wybory). Dodanie jaszczurki i Spocka zmniejsza szansę remisu i wprowadza więcej strategii.
Do szerokiej świadomości grę wprowadził serial Teoria Wielkiego Podrywu (The Big Bang Theory, CBS, 2007–2019) — jeden z najpopularniejszych sitcomów ostatnich dwudziestu lat, opowiadający o grupie fizyków z Caltech i ich perypetiach życiowych i miłosnych. Sheldon i Raj nie mogą się dogadać co oglądać — Sheldon chce Saturn 3, Raj woli Deep Space Nine. Raj proponuje klasyczne kamień-papier-nożyce, ale Sheldon oponuje, tłumacząc że znajomi grający razem remisują zbyt często i proponuje swoją wersję. Tłumaczy zasady Rajowi — a na koniec obaj jednocześnie wybierają Spocka i remisują. Tytuł odcinka bezpośrednio nawiązuje do gry.
Powrót gry — S05E17, The Rothman Disintegration (2012)
Gra pojawia się ponownie w 17. odcinku 5. sezonu — The Rothman Disintegration (premiera: 16 lutego 2012). Sheldon i jego nemezis Barry Kripke walczą o biuro po przechodzącym na emeryturę profesorze Rothmanie. Raj proponuje rozstrzygnięcie przez RPSLS. Kripke nigdy nie słyszał o tej grze, więc Sheldon tłumaczy zasady — a Kripke dla złośliwości prosi go, żeby tłumaczył jeszcze raz i jeszcze raz. Where did the game come from?
Rock, Paper, Scissors, Lizard, Spock was invented in 1998 by Sam Kass and Karen Bryla — long before the TV show. Kass created the expanded version of the classic game after noticing that friends playing against each other tend to tie 75–80% of the time (too few options, too predictable). Adding Lizard and Spock reduces the chance of a draw and introduces more strategic depth.
The game entered mainstream pop culture through The Big Bang Theory (CBS, 2007–2019) — one of the most popular sitcoms of the past two decades, following a group of physicists at Caltech and their social and romantic adventures. The main characters include Sheldon Cooper, Leonard Hofstadter, Howard Wolowitz, and Raj Koothrappali.
First appearance — S02E08, The Lizard-Spock Expansion (2008)
The game first appears in Season 2, Episode 8, titled The Lizard-Spock Expansion (originally aired November 17, 2008). Sheldon and Raj can't agree on what to watch — Sheldon wants Saturn 3, Raj prefers Deep Space Nine. Raj suggests classic Rock-Paper-Scissors, but Sheldon objects, pointing out that familiar players tie too often, and proposes his expanded version instead. He explains the rules to Raj — and at the end they both simultaneously throw Spock and tie anyway. The episode title directly references the game.
The game returns — S05E17, The Rothman Disintegration (2012)
The game reappears in Season 5, Episode 17 — The Rothman Disintegration (originally aired February 16, 2012). Sheldon and his nemesis Barry Kripke are competing for the office vacated by the retiring Professor Rothman. Raj suggests they settle it with RPSLS. Kripke has never heard of the game, so Sheldon explains the rules — and Kripke, being Kripke, keeps asking him to explain them again and again just to be annoying. In this episode Sheldon officially credits Sam Kass as the game's creator for the first time, after which everyone chants "Hail Sam Kass!"
This is the last episode where the game takes centre stage. In other episodes it is briefly mentioned by Howard during a dispute over a Batman comic.
Who is Spock?
Spock is a character from the iconic science-fiction series Star Trek (NBC, from 1966) — a half-Vulcan, half-human science officer aboard the starship Enterprise. Played by Leonard Nimoy, he became one of the most recognisable figures in the history of popular culture.
